I just want to be sure that anyone reading this will know that every public post will be an entire fiction, I am using it to get my novel idea up and running. Thanks!

Marissa. It was my mom's favorite girl name. I wasn't too fond of it growing up, but I don't know of a girl who really did like their own name. It's hard to like your own name when others seem to take your fancy as being more romantic, or grown up. I always liked Genevieve. I remember fighting another girl over it in French class.

I am starting a new job next Monday. Well not really a job that pays, but a volunteer job. I will be working at the Adult Education Center. Mostly typing and filing. That and answering questions at the front desk. Just something to pass the time while my darling husband is away from home. Daniel will be happy to see me out of the house and no longer being a hermit.

As for now the bed is calling and I am terribly sleepy. I hope it will be somewhat warm tomorrow. Leili, our dog, will not be happy without a walk. How I hate the cold weather.

Love, M

This is about ... The First Day
Who can see this ... Public

She walked up the huge front stairs, looking mostly at her feet as they touched each stone slab. She looked up towards the wooden door and the sign that read “Adult Education Center” in bright gold letters. She took a deep breath. Forcing herself to move forward through her nervousness, she pulled the door open. She wasn’t sure what she was expecting but the marble stairs leading to another door were not exactly it. She let out a sigh of relief and frustration. She took the stairs a bit quicker despite her sweaty palms and butterfly filled stomach.

Opening the inner door, she held her breath for the second time. What faced her was a large beautiful wooden staircase that wound around the wall to an open foyer. Large glass shades on an elaborate chandelier were swaying slightly over the top of the foyer.

Right beside the bottom of the stairs was the entrance to a small elevator. It chimed and opened as she stood staring at it. She got the funny feeling of Déjà vu Only she felt there should have been a small black cylindrical ash tray by the door. She shook off the feeling and walked towards the room to her right, opposite the elevator and stairs.

The front desk was made of a lighter wood than the stairs, and was on the very end of the room between two Greco-Roman pillars. In the middle of the room was a very large heavy looking table with chairs that looked just as sturdy. Magazine racks lined the walls, and newspapers littered the table.

Just off beyond her view she could hear a door close, then saw the woman come around a corner. She was smiling, and walking slowly.

“Hi!” her voice was cheerful but not overly annoying.

“Hi” Marissa slowly said, taking the offered hand in a quick shake.

“I am Andra. Let me get some paperwork out for you, then we will get to the training.” She said as she lifted a leaf from the long front desk and stepped behind.

Andra motioned for Marissa to follow her through, “You don’t want to fill out the paper work at the big table, here take my desk, no one will bother you back here.” She motioned to a small desk that was pigeon holed into the corner.

Marissa smiled, and sat down to fill out the papers handed to her. Andra walked back out the leaf entrance putting it down once again behind her and strode purposely towards the stairs. “I’ll be back, I am just going to tell Bertie, the director, you’re here.”

Marissa nodded and gave a half smile, and watched her disappear up the stairs. She started to fill in the various forms.

“Excuse me”

Marissa barely noticed the male voice interrupting her train of thought.

“Excuse me”

The voice came through louder and Marissa startled and looked up towards the voice.

“Yes?” She said, looking quite puzzled.

“When is the next English class? I have a neighbor who wanted to take it”

Marissa got to her feet, and started leafing through the pamphlets on the large front desk.

“Ummm” she shuffled some more papers.” I don’t really work here yet”

The man was about to walk away from the desk when Marissa laid her hands on the letter sized paper with dates and times.

“Oh! I found it! Here it is” She offered him the paper and felt quite proud of herself.

“Looks like we got a self starter! I like that. I’m Bertie, are you doing ok on the forms? Have any questions?”

Bertie turned out to be a large woman; she looked like she would be grumpy and mean, except for the smile on her face that said otherwise. The smile looked out of place.

Marissa spent the rest of her day getting to know the two women, and following Andra around the building. She was grateful for the long bus ride home, even if it was crowded.
